getting started

If you would like an initial consultation with me, we can discuss what type of service you are looking for.  Here, I can run through the services I offer or what might be beneficial to you in the context of your existing lifestyle and commitments.  You may decide to have a one off session maybe simply to understand your mind-body composition or you may wish to create your very own Ayurvedic lifestyle and want to learn more about what is taught in the classes deciding to take things at your own pace once you have the relevant knowledge under your belt.  Perhaps you want a complete overhaul and are ready to embark on a five-week immersive programme, tackling several areas of your lifestyle.  A 1:1 private coaching session would enable me to create a bespoke schedule for you based on your mind-body composition and we can work together to observe and monitor your journey to optimal health and wellbeing. Perhaps you want to take a yoga class with me on a regular basis or would like me to devise a yoga-inspired functional movement programme to help you with your chosen sport.  Maybe you wish to have yoga in your school or your teenager learn some well needed life coping skills and strategies.  Whatever it is, please feel free to get in touch.

HELLO, I'M GINA

SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGIST, AYURVEDIC LIFESTYLE CONSULTANT & YOGA TEACHER

I grew up in 1970's Britain, wore pale blue NHS specs and rode around on a sunbeam yellow Chipper - at a time when the sun always seemed to be shining. Ayurvedic practices were woven into my childhood.  I did neti cleansing and abhyanga and we routinely cooked with spices.  There were other things that appeared to come from another land (concepts of the Self and health and healing for example) but I didn't really realise this until much later in life.

I studied Social Anthropology at University and have an ethnographic interest in South Asia.  I came across religious ideologies and societal norms far removed from the Fens where I had grown up and it fascinated me.  I then went on to work in India for a non-governmental organisation tackling child labour.  Decades later I became a yoga teacher and it was with this, I felt a sense of belonging and coming full circle. It is something I still explore in my (ayurvedic) understanding of consciousness, nature and inter-connectedness.  It is this I wish to share with you. Helping you to reveal your version of Self, a place of calm, joy and happiness.

SO, WHAT IS AYURVEDA

and how do you pronounce it?

AY-UR-VAY-DUH

  • Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old healing system founded in ancient India. It comes from the Sanskrit words 'ayus' meaning life and 'veda' meaning wisdom.

  • From the Ayurvedic perspective, human beings are not viewed as mere thinking physical machines, but rather as fields of intelligence in dynamic exchange with the energy and information of the environment.  Health is a state of vibrant balance in which all the layers of one’s life are integrated.

  • Ayurvedic practices aim to nip illness in the bud before it can flourish and rejuvenate and nourish the body helping us to maintain good health and vitality.

  • In contrast to Western medical science with its focus on symptomatic treatment, Ayurveda addresses the root cause of illness.

  • It offers a holistic and individualised approach to health since each person has a unique mind-body composition.

  • Since 95% of chronic illness can be managed through  lifestyle practices, having an ayurvedic toolkit to hand to correct an imbalanced body-mind is therefore invaluable.

  • The modern world is filled with practices that affect us - physically, mentally and spiritually.   From the food we eat, to the work we do, our relationships, daily routines and sleep patterns - everything is affected by what we consume and how we digest and process our sensory experiences.

  • Ayurvedic practices teach that the more we can sync with our true selves and the natural cycles of nature, the greater the chances for optimal health.

THE ART OF JUST BEING

Today, doctors are increasingly citing stress as a major contributing factor to most illnesses.  Our bodies and minds react to it by shifting out of balance, which ultimately creates physical challenges and emotional turbulence that impact our lives at home, at work, and at play. In time, we can find ourselves in harmful relationships and non-nourishing patterns of eating, sleeping, and digestion. My Ayurvedic Lifestyle sessions will help you identify imbalances in your life and provide strategies to develop a nurturing daily routine to restore your equilibrium.

You will also learn to release emotions in a healthy way so that they don’t build up in your physiology. Most importantly, as your stress is eliminated, your mind and body begin to function with maximum effectiveness, creating health, vitality and happiness.

ASSESSMENT, AWARENESS, ACTION

how does it work?

AN EMPHASIS ON MAINTENANCE, PROMOTION OF HEALTH AND PREVENTION OF DISEASE

THROUGH MINDFUL DIET AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Ayurveda has at its core the perspective that everything that exists in the Universe including ourselves, is made up of five great elements - earth, water, fire, air and ether.  Each person is made up of a blend of these elements but is dominant in one, two or all three of these energies and these  gives us our unique qualities and characteristics.  These mind-body compositions are called doshas : Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  (Vata relates to air + space, Pitta relates to fire + water and Kapha to water + earth).

The doshas ebb and flow, moving in and out of balance according to lifestyle choices, changing seasons and the ageing process.  These fluctuations affect our physical and emotional health leaving us feeling energised and optimistic or lethargic and depleted.  Left untended imbalances will show up in the mind and body through experiences such as anxiety, stress, disconnection, anger, low immunity and chronic illness.  If however we learn to look after ourselves through mindful practices and actions we can bring ourselves to health and happiness and to peace and connectivity to the wider environment, of which we are organically part.

The aim of an Ayurvedic lifestyle therefore is to initially help us to recognise when we are out of balance.  It also provides us with the necessary knowledge and practical tools to bring us back into a state of homeostatis leading to optimal health and wellbeing.
